Challenge

The Operator, Marathon, had problems sealing off coal cletes during the cementing
of all of their casing runs in the Powder River Basin. The cement was causing
damage to the cletes thus decreasing production with in these zones. Ultra Spacer
was incorporated into the cementing program with posistive results. A 20 well
package was awarded PFS for the testing of the Ultra Spacer.

Results

Prior to using Ultra Spacer the Operator was blending 44 bbls of lead
and 44 bbls of excess Light Wt. Cement (10 ppg)for all of their casing
runs, noting from zero returns to 3-4 bbls of excess Light Wt. Cement
attainable back to surface. The first 2 jobs utilizing the Ultra Spacer
attained 100% or all 44 bbls of excess Light Wt Cement to surface on
the cement job with an excellent cement bond log noted. The Operator
choose for the next 2 wells to switch over to Conventional Cement,
weighing 15.5 ppg, utilizing the Ultra Spacer in an attempt to reduce
thier cementing cost. For the next 2 wells 44 bbls of lead and 44 bbls
of excess Conventional 15.5 ppg Cement was blended for the casing
jobs with all 44 bbls of excess Conventional Cement being noted to
surface. At present time Marathon is only needing to blend 8-10 bbls
of excess 15.5 ppg cement with 6-10 bbls noted back to surface on
each casing run and no cement fall back issues noted. By using the
Ultra Spacer the cementing cost in the Powder River Basin area has
been cut in half. As of 2/16/09 Marathon has performed over 100+ jobs
with no loss return issues on the cementing phase and zero fall back
issues.
